We all love those nice, Non-stick pans which make cooking a whole lot easier. However, researchers are now saying chemicals contained in them are actually making you fat, as well as possibly leading to cancer.

Harvard University researchers have found that chemicals found in kitchen utensils like non-stick pots and pans and even fast food packaging slow down your metabolism and this causes you to gain weight.

The chemical, known as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), is commonly used in the makeup of mattresses, carpets, clothes and non-stick pots and pans.

The study, published in the scientific journal PLOS Medicine, analyzed data from 621 overweight people – all participants in the Prevention of Obesity Using Novel Dietry Strategies clinical trial.

They analyzed the levels of PFASs in the participants’ blood and their weight gain over time.

During the first six months of the trial, researchers observed that participants initially lost weight, but regained almost half of the weight that they lost over an 18-month period.

Participants with higher levels of PFASs, particularly among women, gained the most weight.

“Obesogens have been linked with excess weight gain and obesity in animal models, but human data has been sparse. Now, for the first time, our findings have revealed a novel pathway through which PFASs might interfere with human bodyweight regulation and thus contribute to the obesity epidemic,” says senior study author Professor Qi Sun.

Previous research has also linked PFASs to cancer.

“We typically think about PFASs in terms of rare health problems like cancer. But it appears they are also playing a role in obesity, a major health problem facing millions around the globe,” says study co-author Professor Philippe Grandjean.

“The findings suggest avoiding or reducing PFAS exposure may help people maintain a stable bodyweight after they successfully lose some weight, especially for women.”
